The scissors were open in Aunt Ruth\u2019s hand, but she could not bring herself to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYour mother stitched this herself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara knew. She had spent six months protecting those stitches from alterations and careless fingers. Now she stood in a kitchen behind her wedding reception, holding up the skirt with both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI know,\u201d she answered. \u201cCut it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty minutes earlier, her greatest concern had been the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It had started during the speeches, drumming against the windows of the converted barn. Staff hurried to bring cushions in from the terrace. Someone propped open a side door while carrying the last chairs inside, and a cold draft swept beneath the tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara barely noticed. Her new husband, Ben, was telling their guests about the disastrous cake he had baked for her on their third date. For the first time all day, she was laughing without checking whether anything needed fixing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he stopped speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His eyes dropped to her skirt. The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cClara. Don\u2019t move.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked down. The ivory fabric near her left ankle bulged outward, settled, then shifted again. She was standing still, yet something beneath the dress was moving toward her feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A cousin pushed back her chair. Someone near the window said it might be a rat. Within seconds, people were standing to see, their questions overlapping until Clara could barely hear Ben.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then something scratched against her stocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She caught his wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGet it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ben knelt, but the moment he touched the hem, the hidden creature struggled harder. The skirt jerked sideways. Clara felt a tug at her waist, as though someone had caught the lining and was pulling it from below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ben lifted the outer layer just enough to look underneath. For a moment, he said nothing. Then his shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a kitten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two wet ears appeared between the folds, followed by a face so small that Clara could have covered it with her palm. The kitten opened its mouth, but the sound was almost lost beneath the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few guests laughed in relief. Clara did not. The animal tried to retreat, and the lining pulled tight again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of its front paws was caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth crouched beside Ben. A loose section of the old inner netting had wound around the kitten\u2019s claws. Every frightened movement drew it closer. Pulling the animal free would only tighten the tangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe need somewhere quiet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kitchen was through a door a few steps away. Ben supported the kitten inside a folded napkin while Clara shuffled beside him, gathering her skirt so none of them would trip. Ruth went ahead to clear a chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Away from the music and the crowd, Clara could finally see the creature properly. Its fur was gray beneath the dirt, its legs thin, its whole body trembling. It had probably slipped through the open door and crawled into the nearest hiding place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth tried gently to loosen the netting, then stopped when the kitten cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll have to open this seam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was when she fetched the scissors from her sewing bag, and when her hand hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dress had belonged to Clara\u2019s mother, who had died two winters earlier. Clara had found it wrapped in a cotton sheet at the back of a wardrobe, with a spare button tucked into the folds. Inside the bodice, her mother\u2019s uneven hand stitches were still visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the fittings, Ruth had offered to replace the brittle lining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo one would know,\u201d she had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterward, they worked around the old fabric, repairing what they could. She wanted to wear something her mother had touched, and that wish had become a rule: nothing must happen to the dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now the kitten\u2019s trapped paw rested against Ben\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara looked at the scissors again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPlease, Ruth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her aunt opened the seam, working slowly while Ben kept the animal still. Once the lining fell loose, she could separate the strands without pulling on its paw. A final piece of netting slipped away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kitten folded itself into the napkin and went quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara sat down hard on the kitchen chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell,\u201d Ben said after a moment, \u201cI think we can cancel the second dance lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She laughed, then covered her face. Tears came anyway. Ben stayed beside her, one hand on her shoulder, the other beneath their unexpected guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The venue manager brought a clean towel and found a ventilated carrier used for her own cat\u2019s visits to the vet. She said a stray had recently been seen around the outbuildings, though she did not know whether this kitten belonged to it. When the rain eased, she would check the sheds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou can go back to your guests,\u201d she told them. \u201cI\u2019ll keep an eye on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara nodded but remained seated. Someone had started the music again. The wedding was continuing without anyone needing her to hold every piece of it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth knelt to inspect the damage. There was an open seam, a torn patch of netting, and a muddy mark near the hem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can pin this up for tonight. We\u2019ll mend it properly later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara ran a finger over the stain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI wanted it to look exactly like hers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth glanced up. \u201cHers had a burn in it by the end of the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA spark from a sparkler. Low down, on the other side. She was furious for about ten minutes. Your father kept apologizing, even though he hadn\u2019t been holding it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou never asked whether she ruined her wedding dress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth turned the hem and showed her a tiny repair Clara had assumed was part of the original stitching. For months she had handled the gown as though it had survived untouched. All that time, someone had already mended it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Clara returned to the reception, people began asking questions. Was she hurt? Had something bitten her? Was the dress all right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re both fine,\u201d she said. \u201cThe kitten and me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ben picked up the microphone to finish his speech, discovered he had forgotten the ending, and thanked the kitchen staff instead. Clara took off her shoes beneath the table. Later, when they danced, the pinned lining brushed her calves and the muddy hem swept across the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following morning, they called to ask about the kitten before asking whether anyone had found Ben\u2019s missing cuff link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The manager arranged a veterinary check and contacted a local rescue. Staff searched the grounds, and the rescue made inquiries, but no owner was found. Clara and Ben offered the kitten a home if no one came forward. A few weeks later, they collected her in a borrowed carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They named her Button, although Ben maintained that \u201cUninvited\u201d would have been more accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruth repaired the dress before it went back into its cotton wrapping. This time Clara helped, passing the needle through the lining while her aunt showed her how to keep the stitches small. Beside her mother\u2019s work, a short stretch of thread was now her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The photographer offered to remove the muddy mark from every picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Clara asked her to leave it in the photograph taken just outside the kitchen: Ben holding the towel, Ruth carrying her sewing bag, and Clara bending close to look at the small gray face between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
